losing your job used to be shameful. now it’s a whole identity
the stigma around layoffs is shifting. navigating job loss is of course still a difficult issue, but in the digital age, laid-off workers are turning to social media to find community and hopefully turn their experiences into opportunity.
linda says: it took years for me to admit i got fired in 2000, and up til now have only said it privately. now that losing a job is becoming commonplace, consider how you can help destigmatize - and normalize - it for others.

emily in paris (netflix)
it's back and, fueled by the paris olympics, more french than ever! (meaning, less second-screening and more attention to subtitles). but i enjoyed the opportunity to practice my french and get a little extra time with the non-emily characters (in fact, it occurred to me that this may ultimately end up being a show whose title is a vestige of a former plot...a la the sitcom COUGAR TOWN). the plots are still as outlandish as the outfits, but the actors are earnest and familiar, making it a cozy escape to watch.

US open finals (abc, espn)
like all sporting events and outdoor activities these days, tennis is certainly having a moment (thank you, CHALLENGERS!). with record-busting crowds and A-listers angling for honey deuces (google it ICYMI), i'll be watching from the comfort of my couch. and for the first time in over a decade, an american may take home the coveted cup on our own home turf!

feel the drive (doctor’s cat)
every season i am enthralled with INDUSTRY's soundtrack choices. this season perfectly chose this italo-disco 1983 bop to accompany the show's first partying binge of the season, the beat bouncing in the background as yasmin dons a barrister's wig while having unfiltered, intoxicated work chats with eric in the wee hours before a major IPO. no sleep for these pierpoint night owls!

long island compromise (penguin random house)
this saga of a suburban jewish family reads like the love child of SUCCESSION x FLEISHMAN IS IN TROUBLE. and that makes sense, since the latter series was also written by taffy brodesser-akner, mixing the ambitious privilege and inner demons of the fletcher family, whose lives are irreparably impacted by the patriarch's mysterious kidnapping. i can already see the series come to life off the pages.
