the bear (hulu)
i devoured the second season in three sittings. this season was absolutely phenomenal, and the christmas episode, featuring a star-studded cast of newly introduced characters, made it an even heavier hitter. the storytelling was well-balanced for every character, and served as a reminder that even when everything seems to be going right in life, it doesn't matter if you haven't dealt with your trauma.

arnold (netflix)
i watched all three parts of this documentary about schwarzenegger, which seemed like it was carefully curated by schwarzenegger himself. because of that, flaws are often positioned as ultimate strengths - but still, objectively looking at his achievements is truly impressive. i came away more a fan of arnold - despite the documentary provoking some intense convos in our household about his shortcomings -- so good work, arnold: mission accomplished!

black mirror (netflix)
a whole new season of terrifying technological surreality that feels a little less surreal than previous seasons. the first episode, JOAN IS AWFUL, features SCHITT'S CREEK star annie murphy in an timely AI-centric episode that has NETFLIX in on the joke. mostly, what sticks out to me is joan's streaked hairstyle - will that show up in culture?

queenmaker: making of an it girl (hulu)
seems it's the summer of re-examining early aughts NYC culture (see earlier playlist item about rewatching GIRLS). watching this hulu doc from filmmaker zackary drucker almost felt like flashbacks - while i was still in college prepping for a move to NYC, i started reading GAWKER. tinsley mortimer plays a big role here, but the real star is morgan olivia rose - a trans blogger whose journey interweaves with nyc high society. the whole thing made me very happy to live out west now, blissfully not keeping up with the joneses!

joe henry: all the eye can see
joe henry's new album, "ALL THE EYE CAN SEE," is another jewel from this gifted singer-songwriter. i have worked with joe on many of his albums, and sitting down and listening to his elegant, understated, and rich music is always a special treat. this intimate and moving album explores the human experience with his literate, touching storytelling lyrics. don't miss his performance; he will be at largo at the coronet on july 21st.

family business (netflix)
this french comedy about a paris family that decides to turn its declining kosher butcher shop into the first french marijuana coffee shop is worth the watch. a combination of WEEDS and MODERN FAMILY with an excellent and fun cast. the writing is great, with just the right amount of chaotic humor and drama. the show's three seasons keep you engaged and don't disappoint.
